7 things I’d love to see on Google+ Hangouts

7 things I’d love to see on Google+ Hangouts

Hangouts are a way to bring together multiple participants in a video chat session – something which has certain been done before – however is implemented in such a user friendly and accessible way that it’s captured my interest far more than anything else on this platform. The potential for using Hangouts to support coaching sessions, webinars, structured meetings and teleconferences as well as informal chats is ripe, and Google are already ramping things up to the next level with the introduction of “Extras” such as screen sharing and collaborative document editing.

A redesign 2 years in the making

A redesign 2 years in the making

Just over 2 years ago, I was languishing in the world of the employed – desperately dissatisfied having experienced the young, exciting, potential-filled company I work for being driven into the ground by an increasingly detached Managing Director.  On December 1st 2009, after months of contemplation, I decided I’d had enough and was going to leave to establish my own website development agency; 3 weeks later I handed in my months notice.

I planned out that month meticulously – building the foundations of a business in my spare time while also attending to the remaining commitments of my full time job.  It’s true what they say about “best laid plans”, however, and mine were scuppered when, on New Years Eve, I received a text message from a colleague telling me she’s just been informed that the company was going into administration – our jobs were gone, and we weren’t being paid outstanding salary.

Suddenly the 3 weeks I had remaining to prepare for launching my own business had dwindled to nothing – I had to get moving, fast.

Over-thinking your website

Over-thinking your website

For anyone who has been following this blog, you may note that it has not been updated for several months. Ironic, considering that the very first post was a commentary on the importance of having a regular flow of content on your site.

A large part of the reason for the lack of recent updates has been that we’ve been stuck in the process of redeveloping the site for a number of months now. I have yet to meet a fellow web developer who does not suffer from a severe case of “cobblers shoes”, and we’re no different!

Tweeting for England

Tweeting for England

Very few companys’ products and services have achieved the holy grail of true brand penetration – that is when their brand enters the day to day lexicon of the general public. How many of you hoover your floors, drink vodka and coke, use sellotape etc? More often than not, you won’t be hoovering with a Hoover vacuum cleaner…

When it comes to online companys and their services, only Google and Facebook to date have really accomplished anything near the level of those other, older brands – people are googling and facebooking each other all of the time – however now, Twitter is poised to make that breakthrough.

Dating your business

Dating your business

Just a quick tip when it comes to your website; if you have a blog or news section (which you should do, as a great way to publish fresh content and boost SEO), and find yourself unable to keep it up to date regularly; then consider asking your website developer to remove the date on which the news/blog entry was posted.

The reason I suggest this is because if you haven’t updated your blog in a while, the only measure a visitor has of how recent the activity on your site has been in the dates of your blog updates; and if your last update was in 2009, what are they going to think?

In all likelihood, they’ll assume you’ve gone out of business, because it doesn’t look like you’ve “been around” since last year.

I’ve built sites with news sections where the “latest news” is still “Welcome to our website”

Online Etiquette – Facebook

Online Etiquette – Facebook

In my last blog update, I covered some point which I feel make up the “etiquette” of Twitter, in a bid to help users new and old to wrap their head around some of the “don’t” of using this particularly powerful social media tool.

This time around, I’m shining the light on Facebook…

Online Etiquette – Twitter

Online Etiquette – Twitter

Sometimes one of the most challenging elements of entering the world of Social Media is trying to wrap your head around the ‘rules’ of a particular community or medium.  Often the best thing to do, at first, is to listen to and observe the way in which a particular crowd interact in order to best guage how to enter the fold yourself.
